Steve Roberts was elected to the State Board of Education in November of 2012 to represent District 2 and the citizens of Johnson County.  Prior to joining the Board, he built a math tutoring business as “Mr. X, Mentor of Mathematics” and taught in a variety of classrooms within public, private, and parochial schools. Mr. X now has video math lessons on the Internet. Steve traditionally tutors math and physics students in Johnson County.

Steve holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Missouri, as well as a Master of Education from Grand Canyon University. He is a licensed teacher in Kansas with endorsements in secondary math, physics, and earth-and-space science.

Steve considers himself blessed to have been born with the “math teacher gene” and to have done a wide variety of things prior to his work on the Board, including: radio sports announcer (101 The Fox, KCFX-FM), over-the-road truck driver in 48 states and Canada, environmental engineer, electrical engineer, editor and statistician for The Kansas City Star and Times, project manager for Sprint Telecommunications, managing editor of a four-color trade magazine, and math instructor for Metropolitan Community Colleges as well as Baker University’s School of Professional and Graduate Studies.

Steve and his wife, Mary Pat Sullivan, are parishioners of the Church of the Nativity Catholic Church in Leawood, Kansas.
