Current Events and Issues

The National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) has awarded a stipend to the Kansas State Board of Education to aid efforts that support school administrators, particularly those in rural areas and those serving both as superintendent and building principal in their district. The State Board will be partnering with the Kansas Educational Leadership Institute, which provides mentoring services to new superintendents and principals.

Together, the Kansas State Board of Education and the House Education Committee are encouraging every school district to implement a policy on financial literacy instruction suitable for their districts. On May 13, Board Chairman Jim McNiece and Vice Chair Carolyn Wims-Campbell joined other State Board members and members of the House Education Committee in the Capitol to sign a letter of support for financial literacy education. Chairman McNiece commended the collaboration of the two groups on this important topic. See Letter

The State Board's regular meeting was May 12 and 13. Action items included the approval of Kansas Curricular Standards for School Counseling and Program Standards for Birth-Kindergarten Early Childhood Unified, Birth-Grade 3 Early Childhood Unified, Building Leadership, District Leadership, Low Incidence Special Education and High Incidence Special Education. They also approved the accreditation of all public Kansas schools and all independent Kansas schools currently participating in Quality Performance Accreditation, allowing them to maintain their current accredited status while the new regulations are finalized and in the required adoption process.
