Kansas Connect & Learn Initiative: Closing the connectivity gap in Kansas school districts

In November 2016, Governor Brownback and Commissioner Watson announced the launch of the Kansas Connect & Learn Initiative in partnership with KSDE and the non-profit organization EducationSuperHighway to ensure every student and teacher in Kansas has the bandwidth they need for 21st century learning.
The 2016 Kansas Digital Learning Report revealed that 26% of districts think their network  infrastructure is not digital learning ready. An analysis of 2015 E-rate connectivity data also shows that 20% of districts aren’t yet meeting the FCC’s 2014 minimum bandwidth recommendation of 100 kbps per student needed for effective use of technology in the classroom.
Through the Connect & Learn Initiative, KSDE and EducationSuperHighway will be working directly with school districts to identify and implement solutions to connect every instructional building via scalable fiber infrastructure and upgrade to affordable, high-speed bandwidth. To accomplish this goal, EducationSuperHighway’s district consultants will work with school district leaders -- at no cost -- to research technology and service provider options, develop a form 470/RFP strategy, and support the implementation of the new network.
