Football Coaches Challenge Each Other To See Which State Can
Recruit More Mentors

TOPEKA - For the past three years Kansas State University’s head football coach, Bill Snyder, and Nebraska’s former head football coach, Tom Osborne, have engaged in a friendly wager to see which state, Kansas or Nebraska, could recruit the most new mentors during the football season. Last year, Kansas University’s head football coach Turner Gill joined team Kansas. Raising the stakes for the 2011 Coaches’ Challenge is the state of Iowa, which is throwing its hat in the ring – making this year a three-state competition between Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa.

“Both on and off the football field, caring role models are making a tremendous difference in the lives of our young people,” Snyder said. “That is why I ask every Kansan to join me in this Challenge by signing up to mentor a young person today.”

The 2011 Coaches’ Challenge runs from Aug. 1 to Nov. 21. The winning team will be announced on Dec. 2, 2011 at the Kansas State/Iowa State Game in Manhattan, KS.  Last year, Kansas was crowned the winner for a third year in a row, recruiting more than 4,000 new mentors. Yet there is still a need for more adult role models.

Currently there are thousands of young Kansans, especially young males, in need of a caring role model. In as little as an hour a week, an individual can offer the support and guidance these young people need to succeed.

The Coaches’ Challenge is a call to all Kansans to become a mentor and invest in the youth of Kansas and the future of our state. Interested Kansans can visit www.KansasMentors.org to learn more about mentoring and to connect with more than175 mentoring programs statewide.

The 2011 Coaches’ Challenge is hosted by Kansas Mentors, Nebraska’s TeamMates Mentoring Program and the Iowa Mentoring Partnership. For more information, visit www.KansasMentors.org or call (785) 296-8447.
