Cybersecurity and Data Privacy Professional Development Webinar Series
KSDE’s Information Technology (IT) team has curated a body of expert presenters to work with school technology directors and staff, superintendents, principals and all other interested parties to navigate the complex and critical practices of cybersecurity and data privacy.
This series of 60-minute webinars will take place at 1 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month.
Advance registration is required. Registrants will receive a confirmation email containing information for joining the webinar.

Think you know everything there is to know about the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)? The Privacy Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) challenges all attendees to put their knowledge to the test! In this session, we will explore complex and varied real-world scenarios around student privacy and ask you, the audience, to help us work through them. This session provides an excellent forum for discussion of complex issues regarding FERPA, and a great space to have your questions answered. Do you think you have what it takes? To that, we say, "It depends!”

Samuel Alva Cybersecurity Advisor Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA)
Samuel Alva serves as the Region IIV Cybersecurity Advisor (CSA) for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. As a CSA, Alva contributes to the development of the national risk picture by assisting with the identification, assessment, monitoring and minimizing of risk to critical infrastructure. He engages as a physical and cyber technical security advisor with federal, State, local, tribal and territorial government mission partners and members of the private sector stakeholder communities. CSAs serve as the link to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) infrastructure protection resources; coordinate security and resiliency assessments and training; and provide a vital link for information sharing in steady-state and during incident response.
Alva is a retired member of the Kansas Air National Guard, with more than 21 years of service.He served many roles in the Air Force and Kansas Air National Guard, including Security Forces team member, Phoenix Raven team member, and a member of 177th Information Aggressor Squadron. As a Phoenix Raven, Alva helped detect, deter and counter threats to AMC aircraft by performing close-in aircraft security and advising aircrews on force protection measures. The 177th Information Aggressor Squadron is an NSA-certified Red Team unit, responsible for conducting full-spectrum threat assessments to identify and mitigate physical and network vulnerabilities for participating Department of Defense units.
Alva earned an associate of applied science in criminal justice from the Community College of the Air Force; an associate of applied science in information systems technology; a Bachelor of Science in security management from Southwestern College; and a Master of Arts in security administration from Southwestern College.

Brittani Fairchild Data Privacy Analyst Privacy Technical Assistance Center U.S. Department of Education
Brittani Fairchild is a Student Privacy Analyst for the Privacy Technical Assistance Center, U.S. Department of Education, helping the education community with concerns related tothe Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), privacy and data governance. Fairchild provides support and assistance to a variety of stakeholders, and though new to PTAC, she has more than eight years of experience in postsecondary education, spending much of that time serving as a FERPA Compliance Officer.
PTAC was established in 2010 by the U.S. Department of Education’s Student Privacy Policy Office (SPPO) and is a one-stop resource for education stakeholders to learn about privacy, confidentiality,and security practices related to student-level data systems and other uses of student data. PTAC operates a student privacy helpdesk; develops privacy and security training materials for states, districts, schools and postsecondary agencies; conducts technical assistance webinars and site visits to local and state educational agencies; and hosts privacy-focused regional meetings and forums for education stakeholders.

Doug Levin Co-founder and National Director K12 SIX
Doug Levin is co-founder and national director of the K12 Security Information eXchange (K12 SIX), a national nonprofit dedicated solely to helping schools protect themselves from emerging cybersecurity threats. He also is the creator of the K-12 Cyber Incident Map, a database of publicly disclosed cybersecurity incidents in K-12 education that serves as the foundation for the "State of K-12 Cybersecurity Year in Review" annual report series. By appointment of Director Jen Easterly, he serves on the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) Cybersecurity Advisory Board.
Levin has been engaged in education and technology policy issues for over three decades – in a variety of roles – most prominently in helping to develop and implement the nation’s first education technology plan and strategy in 1996 under President Clinton, as well as its subsequent updates in 2000 and again in 2004 (under President Bush). He also consulted on the development of the 2016 plan (under President Obama). From 2009-2015, he served as executive director of the State Educational Technology Directors Association (SETDA).
Previously, Levin held positions with the American Institutes for Research, the National Cable and Telecommunications Association and the National Association of State Boards of Education. He has been recognized as one of the most influential people in education technology, and his research and views are routinely sought out by the media. He is a graduate of William & Mary and earned a master’s degree in sociology from The George Washington University.
