State Board of Education to meet next week in Topeka

Kansas State Board of Education members will act on licensing test change recommendations and receive a recap of the success of the 2023 Sunflower Summer program during their monthly meeting next week. 

The State Board of Education meeting will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12, at the Landon State Office Building, 900 S.W. Jackson, Suite 102, in Topeka.  

The agenda items for Tuesday include: 

  • Action on licensing test change recommendations. The following test changes are recommended by the Professional Standards Board. 
    • Remove the Principles of Learning and Teaching pedagogy exam as a requirement for licensure. 
    • Establish a process through the Licensure Review Committee to address educators who completed Kansas-approved teacher preparation programs but haven’t passed the required content exam after two attempts to qualify for a standard teaching license. 
  • Hear a recap on the 2023 Sunflower Summer program. 
  • Hear an update from the Early Childhood Transition Task Force. 
  • Receive the Kansas Standards for Library and Information Literacy Review. 
  • Hear an update from Deputy Commissioner Dr. Ben Proctor on the School Improvement Working Group. This will include an overview of current work related to school improvement, along with a connection to the Kansas Education Systems Accreditation model. 
  • Hear from Noor Haideri, an Overland Park senior at Blue Valley High School, Blue Valley USD 229. In February 2023, Haideri, who was a junior at the time, was named the 2022 Breakthrough Junior Challenge winner. The Breakthrough Junior Challenge is a global science video competition for high school students that challenges students to explain a complex scientific idea in two minutes or less using a video format. 
  • Discuss the use of technology devices by children and youth. 


Tuesday’s meeting is scheduled for recess at 5:45 p.m. 

On Wednesday, Sept. 13, State Board of Education members will begin their meeting at 9 a.m. and: 

  • Act on the Accreditation Review Council’s (ARC) August recommendations for KESA. 
  • Receive ARC recommendations for KESA that will be acted on at the October meeting. 
  • Hear about the Kansas Volunteer Commission. 
  • Hear a preview of the legislative interim committees. 
  • Act to approve a request to contract with the Kansas Educational Leadership Institute (KELI) for mentoring services. 
  • Act to approve AP Seminar: English 10 Assessment funding. 
  • Act on consent agenda items. 


Wednesday’s meeting is scheduled for adjournment at noon.
