Nine Kansas students to be recognized by Gov. Kelly for aviation artwork

Nine Kansas students, ranging in age from 6-17, will be honored by Gov. Laura Kelly on March 30 for their artwork illustrating the importance of aviation.

The nine students will gather at the Statehouse for the recognition.

More than 120 entries were received by the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) Division of Aviation for the 2023 Kansas State Aviation Art Contest. The theme for this year’s art contest was “Air Sports and The Environment,” which encouraged students to create inspirational artwork showcasing how aviation can be a catalyst to protect the planet.

The art contest is an annual event.

Winners from the Kansas contest were submitted to the national contest sponsored by the National Association of State Aviation Officials (NASAO) and the National Aeronautic Association (NAA). NASAO received more than 150 pieces of artwork from 20 participating states for the 2023 U.S. Youth Aviation Art Contest.

Jihyeon “Elly” Han, 13, an eighth grader at Altamont Grade School, Labette County Unified School District 506, received first place in the intermediate category of the national contest. Her artwork had received second place in the intermediate category in Kansas. Her brother, Keonhee (Danie) Han received first place in the intermediate category in Kansas.

Elly Han’s artwork has been submitted to the 2023 International Aviation Art Contest, which will be judged in June by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale.

KDOT Aviation will honor all nine Kansas students on March 30 at the Kansas Statehouse. Gov. Laura Kelly will meet with the winning artists for a photo opportunity, and each first-place winner will receive a prize package sponsored by the Kansas Commission on Aerospace Education (KCAE).
