KSDE TASN to host Kansas Early Childhood Outcome Rating Process workshops

The Early Childhood Outcomes (ECO) and the Child Outcome Summary (COS) process were developed to capture the impact of early childhood special education services on young children with disabilities.

Throughout the year, dedicated early childhood teams diligently document and submit COS rating information to the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) via the Outcomes Web-Based System (OWS). The linchpin for deriving meaningful insights from this data lies in its quality, underscoring the importance of maintaining high standards in data reporting.

The KSDE Technical Assistance System Network (TASN) will host in-person, full-day Kansas Early Childhood Outcome Rating Process Workshops in 2024. This workshop is designed to equip early childhood special education teams in understanding the requirements of Indicator 7: Early Childhood Outcomes reporting; provide guidance and tools that can be used by local programs to ensure high-quality early childhood outcome data reporting; and help teams understand how they can use indicator 7 data for ongoing program improvement.

Programs are encouraged to send small teams (two to four people) of district trainers, who will be provided tools and resources they can use to train staff in their district. The workshop will take place 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 2 in Topeka, and it will be repeated April 5 in Hays.

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Understand key features of the ECO and COS process, including Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) and KSDE requirements and essential knowledge needed to complete the COS.
  • Identify strategies for fostering quality interactions among team members to enhance collaboration during the COS process.
  • Use tools and guidance to train staff in the COS process.
  • Harness the power of ECO data to steer program improvement.
