Event helps spread aviation industry awareness, knowledge

More than 1,000 Kansas children and students will have opportunities to get up close and personal with airplanes and learn more about aviation when the Fly Kansas Air Tour makes stops across the state.

The Kansas Department of Transportation’s Division of Aviation is partnering with the Kansas Commission on Aerospace Education (KCAE) to host the Fly Kansas Air Tour from Thursday, Oct. 5, through Saturday, Oct. 7.

The event focuses on raising awareness of the importance of community airports and promoting STEM and aviation education to young people. The tour began in 2017, according to the KDOT Division of Aviation website. The 2017 Fly Kansas Air Tour lifted off from Wellington on Sept. 29, 2017, for a three-day, nine-city celebration of Kansas aviation. More than 36 aircraft flew an average of 12 hours to help spread industry awareness and knowledge to local students and community members.

Yearly, an average of 1,200 students visit their local airports, interact with pilots and tour aircraft during the tour.
