Gov. Laura Kelly on Monday, May 15, signed Senate Bill 25 into law.
This bill includes numerous items, including one that will help improve mental health services in schools.
School districts will receive $13.5 million for the Mental Health Intervention Team (MHIT) grants in fiscal year 2024. The program identifies students who need assistance, communicates with their family members and links them to an already existing statewide behavioral health system and resources within the Mental Health Providers network.
Grant funds awarded to school districts can only be used to fund school liaisons to provide mental health services to students. Districts will continue to be reimbursed for 75% of the liaison’s salary and fringe benefits, while also receiving 25% as flow-through money to their partnering community mental health centers (CMHC), private provider or a combination of both.
SB 25 passed both chambers with bipartisan support, 91-29 in the House and 29-10 in the Senate.
