KSDE IT offers information about Cybersecurity Awareness Month

Throughout October, the KSDE Information Technology staff will share tips to help you protect your digital life and understand the importance of cybersecurity in our world.

In today’s digital world, cybercriminals often target users through social engineering, exploiting human psychology rather than technical vulnerabilities. Phishing, a common form of this attack, involves the use of “convincing” messages from seemingly trusted sources like banks or colleagues. These messages trick users into clicking malicious links or sharing personal details, giving attackers access to sensitive information.

Even tech-savvy individuals can fall for these well-crafted attacks, as hackers personalize messages using information from social media or other public sources. The best defense is awareness. Users must verify unexpected requests, avoid clicking suspicious links, and stay vigilant in their online interactions to protect against these threats.

Schools are no different, being the second most targeted sector in the U.S. This month we will offer a few useful resources to make you aware of potential attacks and how to mitigate these risks.

This week’s tip is from the Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) includes a series of tactics on how to recognize phishing scams. Although KSDE provides valuable tips from reputable sources, it’s crucial to adhere to your district’s specific technology and security policies.  Phishing:  Outsmart Online Outlaws (cisa.gov)

There are also a few other organizations doing special Cybersecurity Awareness Month activities such as the K12 Security Information eXchange (K12 SIX):  Secure Our Schools Webinars and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST): Cybersecurity Awareness Month
