Nov. 16 livestream discussion will focus on demographic shifts and the impact on Kansas schools

The Kansas Leadership Center (KLC) is hosting an online discussion from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, about demographic shifts and their impact on Kansas schools.

A decline in births and outmigration from Kansas will bring ripple effects that could leave state and local policymakers with difficult choices. The implications of these demographic shifts may impact K-12 schools and ultimately carry over to the state’s public universities, workforce and economic development efforts, according to KLC.

In response to declining enrollment numbers, school districts are facing tough decisions. The trend is impacting both rural and urban districts. Earlier this year, Lawrence Unified School District 497 had to close two schools. KLC’s Journal contributor reported on this complex topic in the fall 2023 edition of The Journal.

Now, individuals from Lawrence USD 497 are offering advice for communities that may encounter similar challenges in the future.

Civic engagement reporter Stefania Lugli will moderate the discussion with the following featured guests:

  • Melody Alexander, Lawrence USD 497 parent.
  • Donna K. Ginther, director of the Institute for Policy and Social Research at The University of Kansas.
  • Dr. Anthony Lewis, Lawrence USD 497 superintendent.
  • Joel Mathis, Journal contributor.

Registration is encouraged but not required for this event. Register here. The event will be livestreamed on KLC’s Facebook page and YouTube channel.

You can submit a question for the discussion online.
