The Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) launched a new webpage for the Registered Teacher Apprenticeship program. The new page is a one-stop site that provides resources for district personnel and potential apprentices who are interested in participating in the Registered Teacher Apprenticeship program. Resources include the apprenticeship program application, essential guidance materials, sample apprentice job descriptions and how-to guides, and details of colleges and universities participating in the program. This initiative is specifically crafted to provide an opportunity for individuals who may not hold a bachelor's degree but are eager to pursue a career in education and earn a bachelor's degree.
Last fall, KSDE piloted the Registered Teacher Apprenticeship program in eight districts and is now expanding the opportunity to all districts for the fall 2024 semester. This apprenticeship program is strategically designed to meet the unique needs of districts to address teacher vacancies. As a four-year competency-based training model, it combines on-the-job learning, college coursework for related technical instruction, mentorship and a structured wage scale. The goal is to empower aspiring teachers, providing them with the skills and knowledge necessary to earn their degrees and excel in the classroom, while providing districts an opportunity to develop career progression for non-licensed personnel in their district.
The Registered Teacher Apprenticeship provides an opportunity for districts to cultivate and elevate internal talent. By actively participating in the identification and training of future educators, districts can play a key role in shaping a diverse and skilled workforce.
The window is open to submit applications to participate in the program. The application window will close on June 1, 2024. If you have questions, please contact Dr. Joel Gillaspie, a Teacher Licensure coordinator, at appprentice@ksde.org. Click this link to access the webpage.
