The Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) is currently seeking feedback and public comments on the Kansas English language arts (ELA) standards.
The purpose of the ELA standards is to provide instructional guidance on what students should know and be able to do in the disciplines of reading, writing, speaking and listening.
A review of the standards began in November 2022. During the review, there were some areas identified for improvement, including structured literacy (semantics, syntax and morphology).
Revisions to the ELA standards include clarification, common language and alignment across grade levels. The revisions also reflect the Kansas Dyslexia Initiative, which includes incorporating the Science of Reading and adopting structured literacy as the explicit, evidence-based model for reading instruction.

There also will be two opportunities for public comment via Zoom. The first Zoom will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, May 25. The second Zoom will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, June 1. Watch for more information coming soon on the Zoom meetings.
The deadline to submit feedback is June 6.
