Staff from KSDE’s Information Technology (IT) department have been working to modernize Moodle, the agency's learning management systems (LMS), http://learning.ksde.org. Moodle is an open source LMS that has been used in education for more than 20 years.
The IT team will perform a series of updates to improve the interface, as well as the functionality of the platform. This will be done by adding some branding items to make the learning site consistent with other KSDE websites.
The KSDE logo will now appear in various locations including the login screen and in the menu bar across all pages.
In addition, the primary menu bar has been updated by consolidating multiple items into two dropdown menus for K-12 staff and KSDE staff. This was done to make it easier for users to find the appropriate courses while clearly differentiating courses for district and agency staff.
The goal was to make it easier for users to find the appropriate courses while clearly differentiating courses for district and agency staff.
The KSDE IT staff have set several new goals to modernize the LMS including aligning the categories with the menu and updating permissions so archived courses are no longer visible to the public. They plan to develop a course highlighting best practices for content creators so standards for course development are consistent across the agency. This includes creating shorter modules, rather than the single long slideshow-type module that frequently causes issues with users. IT staff are looking to implement updated media formats which are more compatible across platforms, including mobile devices.
Contact Chris Ortega, cortega@ksde.org, or Christopher Fletcher, cfletcher@ksde.org, for questions or suggestions on the agency's LMS.
