Ten-week professional development study focuses on structured literacy interventions

The Kansas State Department of Education is hosting a 10-week professional development study via Zoom focusing on structure literacy interventions. 

The study will center around a 10-chapter book authored by leading literacy researchers and is edited by Louise Spear-Swerling. Attendees will have to provide their own copy of “Structured Literacy Interventions: Teaching Students With Reading Difficulties, Grades K-6.” 

Topics for chapters include: 

  • Poor-reader profiles. 
  • Interventions for phonemic awareness. 
  • Basic word recognition skills. 
  • Reading multi-syllabic words. 
  • Spelling interventions. 
  • Fluency and vocabulary interventions. 
  • Comprehension and written expression intervention. 
  • Multicomponent structure literacy interventions for mixed reading difficulty. 


This is a bimonthly study that will take place 4-5 p.m. Mondays beginning Sept. 18. Other dates are Oct. 2, 16, 30; Nov. 13 and 27; Dec. 11; Jan 8 and 22; and Feb. 5-19. 

A text-based professional learning certificate for professional development attendance will be provided.
