State Board of Education to review changes to KESA process, act on CTE pathway recommendations

Kansas State Board of Education members will hear about recommended technical changes to the accreditation process, review the legal provisions and State Board processes for the dissolution of a unified school district and more next week during their July meeting at the Landon State Office Building in Topeka.

The state board will meet Tuesday, July 11, and Wednesday, July 12.

During the afternoon portion of Tuesday’s meeting, KSDE’s Accreditation and Design (AD) team will present technical changes to the Kansas Education Systems Accreditation (KESA) model for the 2023-2024 school year.

Technical changes include:

  • Reporting expectations for now and in the future.
  • Peer review enhancement.
  • A learning year, which will allow for system equalization.

This presentation will be informative, as the full scope of enhancements to KESA will be presented in October, with action slotted for December.

Representatives from the Lawrence College and Career Academy (LCCA) will provide a presentation on their program to the board. LCCA prepares students for self-sustainability through learning academic, career, social and emotional skills leading to high school graduation, career path employment and successful completion of postsecondary education opportunities.

State Board of Education members may act on:

  • Accreditation Review Council’s (ARC) June recommendations for KESA.
  • The Apprenticeship Mentorship Collaboration Grant.
  • Recommendations of the Professional Practice Commission (PPC).
  • Career and Technical Education (CTE) Pathway Credential recommendations.

Other items to be presented and/or discussed at the meeting include:

  • An update on strategic initiatives the Teacher Licensure team worked on during the 2022-2023 school year.
  • At-risk programming and funding updates that have taken place since the June Board meeting.
  • Discuss options and approve FY 2025 budget recommendations.
