Friday, June 9, is deadline to submit applications for MHIT, Safe and Secure Schools grants

The deadline to submit applications for the Mental Health Intervention Team (MHIT) grant and the Safe and Secure Schools grant is 5 p.m. Friday, June 9.

For the MHIT grant, the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) invites proposals for projects that coordinate school-based services with a Community Mental Health Center (CMHC) or other approved mental health provider for students who need help during the 2023-2024 school year.

The MHIT program grant supplies school districts with funds to hire school liaisons to aid and provide mental health services to students, as well as funds for CMHCs or other mental health providers districts are working with.

Applications can be downloaded from the MHIT website.

For more information about the MHIT grant, contact KSDE’s John Calvert by email at jcalvert@ksde.org or by phone at 785-296-7056.

Gov. Kelly signed 2023 House Sub for Senate Bill 113, which provides $5 million to school districts through grants for school safety. Grant funds can only be used to meet the following Kansas Safe and Secure School standards – infrastructure, technology, communication, new school resource officer positions and Narcan kits. These grant funds have a $1 for $1 local match.

The Safe and Secure Schools Grant application can be found here.

For more information or questions regarding the Safe and Secure Schools grant, contact KSDE’s Jim Green by email at jgreen@ksde.org or by phone at 785-296-4946.
