A four-week Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) book study beginning June 8 will cover the nature and reading of dyslexia, diagnosing dyslexia, turning struggling readers into proficient readers and success after high school and beyond. 

The book study highlights the book, “Overcoming Dyslexia,” second edition, by Dr. Sally Shaywitz. 

The event will be at 9 a.m. June 8, 15, 22 and 29 via Zoom. It will last about an hour each week. To register, visit Meeting Registration - Zoom. 

Topics each week and the guest speakers are: 

• 9 a.m. June 8 - Part 1: The Nature of Reading and Dyslexia, Dr. David Hurford, Pittsburg State University chair, Department of Psychology and counseling, and director of the Center for Research, Evaluation and Awareness of Dyslexia. 
• 9 a.m. June 15 - Part 2: Diagnosing Dyslexia, Stacey Cates, co-owner of Kansas City Speech Professionals. 
• 9 a.m. June 22 – Part 3: Helping Your Child Become a Reader, Turning Struggling Readers Into Proficient Readers, Success After High School and Beyond, the Ricker family, parents, Jim and Deb, and their daughter, Molly. 
• 9 a.m. June 29 – Part 4: Making it Work for the Dyslexic Child and Adult, Jim Porter, Kansas State Board of Education vice chair and member of the Kansas Legislative Task Force on Dyslexia, and Dr. Laurie Curtis, KSDE early literacy/dyslexia project manager. 

Participants will need to purchase their own book. However, the book is optional for all four meetings. If participants are taking it for college credit, they will need to purchase and read the book to complete reflection assignments. 

There is no cost to participate in the four weekly sessions. However, if participants are taking the book study for college credit through Fort Hays State University, there will be a fee paid to FHSU.
