State Board to review budget recommendations, act on English language arts standards

Kansas State Board of Education members will hear a discussion about educational options for foster students, review the Every Child Can Read Act and more next week during their June meeting at the Landon State Office Building in Topeka. 

The State Board will meet Tuesday, June 13, and Wednesday, June 14. 

During the afternoon portion of Tuesday’s meeting, KSDE’s Doug Boline, assistant director of Special Education and Title Services (SETS), will lead a discussion on the education options for foster students. Joining him are Bev Mortimer, Jobs for America’s Graduates – Kansas; Vivien Olsen, Kansas Department of Children and Families; Diana Kohls, Orion Education and Training; and Lori Ray, superintendent of Parsons Unified School District 503. 

Jacob McCarty, a recent graduate of Eisenhower High School, Goddard USD 265, will present to the State Board on Tuesday. McCarty will talk about his internship during the spring semester with his district’s community relations department and the Goddard Education Foundation. He also will talk about his recent opportunity to visit with Gov. Laura Kelly about issues he is advocating for. 

State Board of Education members may act on: 

  • Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Aid (ESSER) II change requests, ESSER III expenditure plans and ESSER III change requests for use of federal COVID-19 relief funds. 
  • Accreditation Review Council’s (ARC) May recommendations for the Kansas Education System Accreditation (KESA). 
  • Appointment to the Special Education Task Force 
  • District survey on firearm safety curriculum use. 
  • Updated English language arts standards. 


Other items to be presented at the meeting include: 

  • Deputy Commissioner Dr. Craig Neuenswander, John Hess, KSDE’s Fiscal Services and Operations (FSO) director, and Dale Brungardt, School Finance director, will review and discuss budget recommendations to Gov. Kelly
