Applications being accepted for Kansas Vaping ECHO for Education program

Is vaping an issue at your school? Are you ready to address it and get students connected to the help they need? If yes, then enroll now to take part in the Kansas Vaping ECHO for Education program for the 2023-2024 school year.

In 2019, the Kansas State Board of Education asked that a task force be formed to assist schools in dealing with e-cigarette/vaping use by students. The E-Cigarette/Vaping Task Force determined the need for a Vaping-focused Project ECHO and produced a variety of educational materials, including a comprehensive plan for tobacco-free schools and disciplinary measure recommendations for vaping.

The Kansas Vaping ECHO for Education program is allowing school districts in Kansas to engage in a year-long process to learn more about vaping education and best practices for cessation.

Twenty pilot schools - two from each of the 10 Kansas State Board of Education Districts - were selected for participation in Cohort One of the Kansas Project ECHO on Vaping. There were seven sessions during the 2021-2022 school year dealing with everything from legal issues to restorative justice and success stories.

A second cohort was developed from interested schools that applied to be in the pilot program but weren’t selected. Training began in September with other sessions taking place in October, November and December.

Applications are now being accepted for the third cohort. The first step to enrolling in the Kansas Vaping ECHO for Education program for the 2023-2024 school year is completing an application, which will take about 10 minutes.

The application asks for information about your school, participants in the program and what issues your school is facing. The application requires signatures from the primary contact completing the application, the school principal and the district superintendent.

Selected schools will be notified on a rolling basis until August.

For more information, contact Dr. Robyn Kelso, an education program consultant on the Kansas State Department of Education’s (KSDE) Career, Standards and Assessment Services (CSAS) team. Kelso can be reached by email at rkelso@ksde.org.
