Website helps locate Summer Food Service sites
TOPEKA – The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) provides reimbursement to approved sites for serving healthy meals and snacks to children ages 1 through 18 during the summer months, and a new page on the Kansas State Department of Education’s Child Nutrition and Wellness website can help you find the SFSP site nearest you.
The Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) administers SFSP in Kansas. Schools, public agencies and nonprofit organizations can apply to become an SFSP sponsor site. As long as more than half of the children in the service area of the organization qualify for free or reduced price school meals, the site can offer free SFSP meals to all children at the site without the need to provide identification or establish individual eligibility. SFSP sites are located across the state. Most offer meal programs through June and some continue operating through August.
To find the meal site nearest you, simply go to www.kn-eat.org and choose the Summer Food Service Program link. Once on the SFSP page, click the “Locate a Site Near You” link. A list of all SFSP sponsor sites in Kansas will be provided. Simply click on the sponsor site for addresses of all the locations operated by that sponsor with the days and times meals are provided.
SFSP was created to ensure children would continue to receive the same nutritious meals they receive during the school year over the long school break. If you have questions about SFSP, you can contact the Child Nutrition and Wellness team at the Kansas State Department of Education at 785-296-2276, or visit the SFSP website at www.kn-eat.org.
