Twelve Schools Earn School Counseling Awards

TOPEKA –The Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) today recognized Kansas schools for achieving excellence in the area of school counseling. Twelve schools were honored this afternoon at the Annual Fall Counselor Conference at Emporia State University.
The awards were developed by KSDE based on the Recognized American School Counselor Association Model Program and are presented to schools that demonstrate a high degree of alignment with the Comprehensive School Counseling Program and the Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) in their school counseling program. Two levels of recognition are available. The Program of Excellence Award recognizes schools that demonstrate Kansas best practices through an online application process, while the Standard of Excellence Award honors those that not only demonstrate best practices through their application but also submit samples of their work in a portfolio.

“Through their commitment to the Comprehensive School Counseling Program, these schools have become models for other schools across the state,” said KSDE Education Program Consultant Kent Reed. “Planning and implementing programs at a level that qualifies a school for these awards takes significant time and effort. These schools are to be commended for their commitment to best practices in their school counseling programs.”

Those receiving the Standard of Excellence Award are Cottonwood Elementary School, USD 385 Andover; Logan Elementary School, USD 345 Seaman; Quincy Elementary School, USD 501 Topeka; Riley County Grade School, USD 378 Riley County; St. Mary’s Jr./Sr. High School, USD 321 Kaw Valley; Sunnyside Elementary School, USD 233 Olathe; and Wamego High School, USD 320 Wamego. Those receiving the Program of Excellence Award were Belmont Elementary School, USD 232 De Soto; Humboldt Charter School, USD 258 Humboldt; Humboldt High School, USD 258 Humboldt; Humboldt Middle School, USD 258 Humboldt; and Neodesha High School, USD 461 Neodesha.
